So it appears as though the Conservative government has avoided a vote of non-confidence ... at least for now. They did so by having enough Quebecentric items in the most recent proposed budget for the Bloc Quebequois to vote with them.
The Liberals and the NDP have decided that they're not happy with the budget, and voting against it would be their best bet at a spring election. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer to continue our trend at becoming the next Italy when it comes to leadership turnaround.
On a related note, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has booted former cabinet minister Joe Comuzzi from the party's caucus because of his plans to vote with the Conservatives on the budget. Comuzzi said he is doing so because the budget contains funding for a molecular cancer research centre that employs 300 people in his riding.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't our elected officials supposed to represent the people that elected them? This is the sort of thing that has me completely disinterested in politics. You have a politician that does something right for a change, and the political system punishes him.
With Comuzzi not intending on running in the next election (he's 73), his decision seems to be based on principle rather than political survival.
Way to go Joe !! We need more people like you in Ottawa.
