Ex-smokers are the most annoying types when it comes to complaining about smokers. They go on and on about how horrible smokers smell, how horrible a habit it is, how unhealthy it is, etc. Now I’m not suggesting that any of these things are untrue, it just seems that ex-smokers have a much lower tolerance for smokers than people who have never picked up a cigarette before. Ex-Windows users are much the same way. Many of the people who go on and on about how amazing the Mac is probably used to use Windows. I think its because they realize now the error of their ways, much the same way ex-smokers do, and now they want everyone to benefit from their experience.
I love my Mac. In fact, I love pretty much anything Apple, but I’m going to focus on the Mac today. I am often asked by friends and family what it is that I love about my Mac over the windows computers I used for 15 years. The answer is simple: It just works! Let me tell you how I wound up making the switch from windows. A little over two years ago (November 2005), my wife mentioned to me that she was thinking about getting her own computer. A friend of ours had one of the tiny 12” Powerbooks, and she really loved how small and cute it was. For Christmas that year I bought her a nice shiny new 12” iBook. Having never used a mac for no more than a couple minutes to check email, and wanting to be able to give her a hand when first using it, I pulled it out of its box and went through the setup process. Once it was all setup, I played around on it for a couple hours. I was amazed how easy it was to use. Was it true that all the hype I had heard about the Mac was true? Very soon after than, another friend asked me if I wanted to buy one of his older iBooks. It was a perfect opportunity for me to play around on the Mac without actually making the switch. You see, at the time, Apple had not yet made the switch to the Intel chip, and I was still tied to Windows due to a proprietary application designed for my business. So I bought the computer and started to play. Very soon after that, I was using this old 800mhz iBook over my 2Ghz dell notebook for everything except that one application. Everything is just easier on the Mac, and its designed the way you think it should be. With Windows, features are hidden in places that you don’t ever think to look, but on the Mac, just think about where you think the feature should be, and chances are, that is where it is! Take uninstalling an application as an example. To remove an application from Windows, you have to dig down into the control panel, find add/remove programs, scroll through a list of installed applications, and remove the one you’re looking for. On the Mac, open the applications folder and drag the application to delete to the trash. That’s it! And that’s just one small example! In January of 2006, Apple released their first Intel based computers. By about April, there were a couple different ways you could run Windows on the Mac (remember I still had that proprietary application). So I sold my Dell and my old iBook on eBay, and ponied up for a 15” MacBook Pro. It was love at first sight! Now I tell everyone who will listen that they should get a Mac as their next new computer. Especially the ones that are less savvy. You don’t really have to worry about viruses or spyware, and things are far easier. Sure there is the initial switch over that you have to get used to. The start menu is actually the dock, the menu bar is designed differently, and when you close an application using the red x, that doesn’t always close it. But once you get used to the little things, you’ll wonder why you didn’t make the switch sooner! Of course, once you do make the switch, you’ll wind up being one of those annoying ex-Windows users who can’t stop talking about how great the Mac is :)
